Chapter Ten

It was Tuesday just before noon, and the diner was packed. It didn’t take long for the news to spread that Flo was giving away a free bowl of Angel’s homemade noodles to anyone sitting in the diner at noon. She was making one batch, and when it ran out, that was it.

Ethan was sitting at a small table near the rear of the diner. It was only big enough for two chairs. Anytime anyone looked in Ethan’s direction, he shooed them off with a wave of his hand and a glare.

Others were squeezing into booths and pulling additional chairs around already crowded tables. Some folks came in, and seeing there was no place to sit they left and returned with folding tables and chairs; lining them outside along the sidewalk, hoping to be served.

Angel methodically poured broth into bowls lined up along the double wide islands and on any free counter space in the kitchen. Once the broth was gone, she added a cup of noodles to each bowl; then she added one pork stuffed fish ball. She went around and gave each bowl a stir with a wooden spoon.

Flo, Julie, and Hector were standing near the swinging kitchen door, waiting. Angel turned to them and nodded with a smile. “It’s ready.” The trio placed the bowls on serving carts and rolled them out. Angel could hear the cheers and applause, and though she was a bit tired, she felt good.

Ethan’s eyes lit up when he saw Angel approaching with a small tray, balancing two bowls. She was wearing a bright red chef’s hat and a matching short sleeved chef jacket over slim jeans. Instead of the military boots, she was wearing white canvas shoes.

“Hey there, cowboy,” she said, setting down the tray.

“That’s some kinda get-up,” he said, barely containing a smile.

“You want this bowl or not?”

“I want.” He smiled. She placed the bowls on the table, along with napkin rolled silverware for him and chop sticks for her. Hector was there to take the tray from her.

“Thanks,” she said to him, then she took the seat across from Ethan. “Sorry, I’m just assuming you’re not saving this seat for someone.” She started to stand.

“Sit.” He said motioning to the chair.

“Okay.” She sat and unwrapped the chopsticks.

“You wear this getup whenever you make these noodles?”

“I most certainly do,” she said, tapping the ends of the chopsticks on the table. “Now, let’s dig in while it’s still hot. Unwrap your silverware.” Ethan did as instructed. “Now, take the bowl in your hands and lift it to your face. Smell the blend of noodles, broth, and the little fish ball.” Ethan stifled a chuckle as Angel brought the bowl to her nose and inhaled. “Mmm...” she smiled with her eyes closed.

“Mmm...” he said too, his eyes on her. She opened an eye to peak at him, and he grinned.

Angel gave him a teasing glare before placing the bowl on the table. “Now, take your fork and twirl some noodles onto it.
